How to Install APK Files on Android Safely (Step-by-Step Guide)

An APK is the installation file used by Android apps. Installing one manually is easy once you know where the settings are. This guide works on Samsung, Xiaomi, Oppo, Vivo, Realme, Infinix and stock Android phones.

What Is an APK File?

APK stands for Android Package Kit. It contains everything an app needs to run: code, images and a manifest describing its permissions.

Step 1: Allow Installs From Unknown Sources

Android 8 and newer

Open Settings → Apps → Special access → Install unknown apps, choose your browser or file manager and turn on Allow from this source.

Android 7 and older

Go to Settings → Security and enable Unknown sources.

Step 2: Download the APK

Download the file only from a source you trust. Check that the file size matches the size shown on the download page.

Step 3: Install and Open

Open your Downloads folder, tap the APK, press Install and wait a few seconds. Tap Open when it finishes.

Common Errors and Fixes

  • App not installed: uninstall the older version first, then try again.
  • Parse error: the download is incomplete — download the file again.
  • Blocked by Play Protect: scan the file with a virus scanner before choosing to continue.

Safety Tips

Review the permissions an app asks for, keep Play Protect turned on and back up important data before installing apps from outside the Play Store.
